What is Parent Member?
A Parent Member can serve at CSE and CPSE meetings under New York State law. In order to have a parent member at your CSE meeting, you must request it in writing to Student Support Services at least 72 hours before your meeting. A Parent Member is a member of the Committee for Special education and is there to ensure the proper process is followed during the CSE.
The Special Education Department is looking for additional parents who can volunteer to serve as Parent Members. You are eligible if you are the parent of a classified student, or a student who was declassified within the past five years. Parents of Section-504 students are not eligible, nor are employees of the Mamaroneck school district. As a Parent Member you will:
· Participate in discussions involving eligibility for Special Education services and IEP development;
· Provide information and support to the parent of the student being referred to the Committee;
· Help ensure that the parent understands and is comfortable with the evaluation process;
· Ensure all parent concerns are addressed.
If you have as little as one half day per month, please consider serving in this vital capacity. The amount of time you devote is at your discretion, and all meetings occur during school hours. A two-hour training workshop is required. SEPTA is confident that you will find being a Parent Member a worthwhile and educational experience.
